To mark his visit, Commissioner Gungubele, will lead a human rights education session in a community severely affected by human rights violations, including lack of access to water. This will be followed by an on-site inspection of human settlement challenges, which remain a legacy of historical spatial planning discrimination.
The visit will include high-level stakeholder engagements on pressing issues such as human settlements, climate induced flooding, and immigration challenges. Additionally, the Commissioner will lead a detention monitoring initiative, assessing conditions, and human rights concerns related to immigration detention. The visit will be followed by media engagements.
A key highlight of the week will be a guest lecture on water security and climate change, addressing persistent droughts and flood disasters. The lecture will feature insights from national and global partners, emphasising collaborative solutions.
The visit will conclude with the SAHRC delivering a keynote address at the Nelson Mandela Museum and Qunu Heritage Centre on equality rights, with a particular focus on sexual orientation and the right to education.
