The SAHRC is a state institution established by Chapter 9 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa,1996 to support constitutional democracy, mandated in terms of section 184 of the Constitution to promote the protection, development, and attainment of human rights, and to monitor the observance of such rights within the Republic of South Africa.
The commemoration will serve to honor the legacy of South Africa's human rights struggles and promote ongoing efforts to protect and preserve the fundamental rights and freedoms of all individuals. Human Rights Day Commemoration is an opportunity for members of the community, civil society organizations, governmental bodies, and the media to reflect on the importance of human rights in our society and renew our collective commitment to upholding them.
It is further a call on all South Africans to use Human Rights Month to foster greater social cohesion, nation building and a shared national identity. It is our duty as a nation to strive for inclusive socio-economic development, while ensuring that we combat racism, racial discrimination, and all related intolerances.
