Wednesday, 19 March 2025

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (SAHRC/the Commission) Mpumalanga Provincial Office (MPO), in collaboration with the Mpumalanga Department of Culture, Sports and Recreation (DCSR), will commemorate National Human Rights Day under the theme: “Deepening a Culture of Social Justice and Human Rights.”

March is recognised as Human Rights Month in South Africa, during which the nation collectively honours the principles of respect for and the promotion of human rights and equality of all citisens. The foundation of human rights is rooted in the belief that every individual is entitled to human rights and freedoms enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 solely by virtue of their humanity. In observing Human Rights Day, the SAHRC reaffirms its commitment to its constitutional mandate to promote and protect human rights in the country.

The commemoration aims to celebrate the significant achievements attained over the past 31 years of constitutional democracy, while simultaneously deepening a culture of social justice and human rights. The event will serve as a platform to highlight human rights issues such as gender-based violence promote social cohesion, and nation-building efforts. Additionally, it seeks to enhance public awareness of the SAHRC's work within communities and accessibility.

To further these objectives, the SAHRC and the DCSR, alongside various other stakeholders, will be conducting a roadshow as a prelude to the main commemoration event.
