Media Advisory: The SAHRC Limpopo Provincial Office to meet with the Limpopo Department of Health regarding SAHRC’s observations at several healthcare facilities in Limpopo Province and complaints investigated

Attention: Editors and Reporters
Date: Monday, 31 March 2025

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (SAHRC/the Commission) Limpopo Provincial Office (LPO) to meet with the Limpopo Department of Health following receipt of complaints against the Department. The meeting is  also necessitated by observations made by the Commission while conducting its monitoring activities at various healthcare facilities in line with the SAHRC’s monitoring mandate.

The SAHRC has noted with concern the growing number of complaints relating to healthcare services in the province. The Commission was greatly concerned during its monitoring observations which translated to possible human rights violations due to factors such as infrastructure challenges, shortage of doctors and cardinal staff, and filling rooms challenges, among others.

In South Africa, the right to healthcare is constitutionally guaranteed. In recognition of this fundamental right, the South African Constitution guarantees the right to have access to healthcare services, including reproductive health care, and no one may be refused emergency medical treatment.

The SAHRC Limpopo Provincial Office intends to discuss the above with the Department and find resolutions

The meeting is scheduled as follows:

  • Venue : SAHRC Limpopo Provincial Office, Boardroom.
  • Dates : Tuesday, 01 April 2025
  • Time : 11h00am
