Media Statement: The SAHRC extends submission deadline for its National Inquiry into Policy Framework around Artisanal Mining

Attention: Editors and Reporters
Wednesday, 09 April 2025

On 08 February 2025, the South African Human Right Commission (SAHRC/Commission) released a statement to communicate its planned National Inquiry into Policy Framework around Artisanal Mining.

The Commission stressed that part of the Inquiry will be threefold: considering the impact of artisanal mining/illegal mining on the human rights of the community of Stilfontein; considering the policy gaps and framework into artisan mining; and lastly, operation vala imigodi, as instituted by the South African Police Service.

Although the Commission had initially set 31 March 2025 as the deadline for information from members of the public as well as institutions or organisations, this call has been extended to 30 May 2025. The new deadline will allow individuals and organisations that reached out to the Commission indicating their interest in making submissions after the 31 March 2025 deadline and those who still wish to make submissions. The Commission wishes to reiterate its commitment to giving all submissions due consideration, including those that it has received to date.
