On the background of World Food Day, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC/ the Commission) in collaboration with the Union Against Hunger, will host The Right to Food and Food Sovereignty in South Africa webinar on Thursday, 16 October 2025.

World Food Day is observed annually to raise awareness of hunger, malnutrition, and the urgent need for more equitable food systems across the globe. In South Africa, one in five households faces food insecurity, the right to food remains unfulfilled despite its constitutional guarantee under Section 27(1)(b).

This webinar will serve a platform to raise awareness, share knowledge, and engage diverse stakeholders through dialogue about the challenges and opportunities in relation to the advancement of the right to food in South Africa. The webinar aims to:

  • Highlight the importance of food sovereignty as a framework for realising the constitutional right to food.
  • Create awareness and momentum in advance of the SAHRC’s upcoming public inquiry.
  • Provide a platform for multi-stakeholder dialogue, including voices of government, academia, civil society, and communities.
  • Amplify community practices and lived experiences that demonstrate pathways to food sovereignty.
  • Mobilise interest and participation in the forthcoming public inquiry.
