Media Advisory: SAHRC to commence with National Inquiry into Policy Framework around Artisanal Mining, the impact of Artisanal Mining on the human rights of surrounding communities, and the scope and tactics employed in Operation Vala Umgodi

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC/the Commission/) will hold a National Inquiry into Policy Framework around Artisanal Mining, the Impact of Artisanal Mining on the Human Rights of Surrounding Communities, and the Scope and Tactics Employed in Operation Vala Umgodi.

The Inquiry will be threefold: considering the impact of artisanal mining/illegal mining on the human rights of the community of Stilfontein and other communities; considering the policy gaps and framework of artisanal mining; and lastly, Operation Vala Imigodi, as instituted by the South African Police Service.  To this effect, the Inquiry will build on the 2015 and 2016 artisanal mining reports of the Commission, and seek to foster sustainable solutions prioritising human rights, community well-being, and environmental stewardship.

  • Date: Wednesday, 1 October 2025
  • Venue: Philemon Masinga Sport Complex in Stilfontein, Khuma.
  • Time: 11h00am-16h00

Part 2

  • Date: 2-3 October 2025
  • Venue: Fifth floor, 32 Princess of Wales Terrace, Sentinel House, Parktown
  • Time: 10h00am

The Inquiry will be open to the media.
