In August 2026, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC/Commission) will release four investigative reports pertaining to various complaints in the North West Province.

The first report relates to the complaint concerning the discontinuation of the Free Basic Alternative Energy (FBAE) Programme by Matlosana Local Municipality (Matlosana), leaving thousands of indigent households without interim domestic energy supply. The FBAE programme was intended to provide alternative energy for households in informal settlements and farming communities with alternative domestic energy supply, pending the electrification of those households.

The details of the public release of the first report are as follows:

  • Date: Thursday, 20 August 2026
  • Time: 11:00am
  • Venue: Jacaranda informal settlement, Klerksdorp, North West Province GPS coordinates 26,86133° S, 26,60130° E (https://maps.apple/p/FtiaBWKWRrdWTY)

The second report relates to a complaint lodged on behalf of occupiers of Witfontein Farm within Matlosana against the owner of Witfontein Farm. The allegations made in the complaint included allegations of restricted access to water and firewood, the disposal of animal carcasses near the occupiers’ residences, restrictions on the conduct of traditional ceremonies, refusal to permit the installation of electricity, interference with visitors, and hostility towards the occupiers.

The details of the public release of the second report are as follows:

  • Date: Monday, 24 August 2026
  • Time: 10:00am
  • Venue: Witfontein Farm, Klerksdorp, North West Province.

The third report relates to a complaint lodged by one of the occupiers of Witfontein Farm against Matlosana relating to Matlosana’s failure to provide adequate sanitation to the occupiers, resulting in the occupiers’ continued use of dilapidated traditional pit toilets that pose an imminent risk to the occupiers, particularly children. The third report will also be released on 24 August 2026 at Witfontein Farm.

The fourth and final report relates to a complaint regarding water access challenges in Mamerotse, Tlaseng and Tlapa villages, which fall within the jurisdiction of the Royal Bafokeng Administration and the Rustenburg Local Municipality.

The details of the public release of the fourth report are as follows:

  • Date: Wednesday, 26 August 2026
  • Time: 10:00am
  • Venue: Mamerotse Community Hall, Rustenburg, North West Province.

The public releases of the reports will provide an opportunity for the Commission to engage the parties and the affected communities on the Commission’s key findings and recommendations on the various complaints investigated.

The engagements are open to members of the public and the media.
