The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), in partnership with the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DoJ&CD), will host the Grand Finale of the 15th Annual South African National Schools Moot Court Programme on 04 October 2026 at the Constitutional Court in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.
Learners from Ndabankulu Senior Secondary School and Umtata High School (Eastern Cape), Tygerberg High School (Western Cape) and Klaas Mothapo Secondary School (Limpopo) will argue before the judges of the Constitutional Court, the Supreme Court of Appeal and the High Courts whether it is constitutional for a school to include a clause in its Cell phone and Internet Policy that limits learners of a specific age from accessing social media platforms whilst on school premises and during school hours. This year’s moot programme is centred on the growing prevalence of online harms affecting children, including cyberbullying, online sexual exploitation and abuse, exposure to harmful or inappropriate content, as well as unsupervised contact with unknown adults.
The Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube; the Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Andries Nel; and Commissioner Tshepo Madlingozi will reflect on the importance of the moot court programme in advancing human rights awareness, constitutional literacy and active citizenry.
