Media Invite: Three Chapter 9 Institutions hold a Joint National Inquiry (National Inquiry) into the Reporting, Victim Support, Investigation and Pre-Trial Functioning of the Criminal Justice System Response to Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBV

Attention: Editors and Reporters

Date: 25 September 2026

The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE), the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), and the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL Rights Commission) will hold a Joint National Inquiry (National Inquiry) into the Reporting, Victim Support, Investigation and Pre-Trial Functioning of the Criminal Justice System Response to Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) in South Africa.

This National Inquiry stems from the persistent scourge of violence against women across the country. Despite numerous policy commitments and institutional mandates, significant systemic shortcomings continue to undermine South Africa’s response to GBVF.

In addition, the Commissions have received an overwhelming response to the public call for submissions issued, reflecting the significant public interest in the Inquiry and the collective commitment of victims and/or survivors, families, civil society organisations, community-based organisations, researchers, legal practitioners, service providers, academics, institutions, and members of the public to contribute towards strengthening South Africa's response to Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF).

The National Joint Inquiry seeks to hold duty bearers accountable of issues, challenges and improvement that may be necessary to the justice system.
The Inquiry is scheduled to take place as follows:
Dates: 28 September – 02 October 2026
Venue: Forum A, Braampark Office Park, 33 Hoofd Street, Braampark, Braamfontein, Johannesburg
Times: 09: 00 daily
Members of the media are invited to cover the proceedings
