The Commission conducted an investigative inquiry into the state of water and sanitation service delivery in the Gauteng province from 19 to 21 May 2026. The investigative inquiry was prompted by numerous and persistent water and sanitation complaints received by the Gauteng Provincial Office over an extended period. The inquiry examined persistent water and sanitation challenges across the province, including interruptions in water supply, inadequate infrastructure, wastewater treatment failures and pollution, and the impact of these challenges on communities’ access to essential services and their constitutional rights to access to water, health and dignity.
The inquiry provided municipalities, government departments, water service institutions, civil society organisations and affected communities with an opportunity to present evidence and respond to the issues under investigation. The Commission has finalised its inquiry report, setting out its findings and recommendations to address the challenges identified and strengthen accountability among the responsible authorities.
Members of the media are encouraged to attend the launch to engage with the Commission on the report’s findings and recommendations.
