Media Invite: SAHRC hosts a National Investigative Hearing on the Status of Mental Health Care in South Africa

Attention: Editors and Reporters

13th November 2017

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) will convene a two day National Investigative Hearing on the Status of Mental Health Care in South Africa from Tuesday, the 14th November 2017 until Wednesday the 15th November 2017 at the SAHRC Head Office in Johannesburg.

The National Investigative hearing follows the tragic deaths of over 100 mental health care users (MHCU/s) who were moved from Life Esidimeni Healthcare to various NGOs by the Gauteng Department of Health during the period between March 2016 and June 2016 as part of the Gauteng Mental Health Marathon Project (GMMP).

The SAHRC’s decision to convene a national hearing is informed by a number of considerations, including, the potential for vulnerable MHCUs to be affected by compounded human rights violations, the need to identify structural issues that hamper mental health care, the duty of the SAHRC and to provide recommendations to address systemic non-compliance with human rights standards.

Details of the hearing are as follows:
Date: 14th – 15th November 2017
Venue: 2nd Floor Training Centre, SAHRC Head Office, Forum 3 Braampark, 33 Hoofd Str, Braamfontein
Time: 08:30 -16:00

A draft programme will follow with the release of our media statement.
