Media Invite: SAHRC Mpumalanga office hosts a Provincial Indaba on evictions in farming communities

Attention: Editors and Reporters

22 November 2017

The SAHRC Mpumalanga provincial office will be hosting a Provincial Indaba on human rights environment of the farm dwellers and farm workers under the theme: “Evictions in Farming Communities.” The purpose of the Indaba is to highlight the pervasiveness of evictions in the farming communities and the lack of proper implementation of the provisions of the enabling legislation such as the Extension of Security of Tenure Act 62 of 1997 (ESTA) in the province.

The Provincial Indaba is intended to assist the Commission to raise awareness and promote human rights advocacy of farm dwellers and workers, as well as the constitutional and international law obligations that require respect for, promotion and protection of everyone’s human rights. To consider the coherency of the legislative and policy environment from a rights based perspective and recommend to the State, at all levels, the adoption of legislative measures that will promote the respect for the human rights of farm workers and dwellers. Further, to develop a normative practical toolkit to be used by stakeholders in advocating for the rights of farming communities and the effective implementation of the ESTA.

The engagement is scheduled to take place as follows:
Date:                23 November 2017
Venue:             Mkhondo Local Municipality Council Chamber, Piet Retief
Time:               11h00 – 15h00
