JOHANNESBURG - The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) says that its hearings on the status of mental healthcare in the country has revealed a shortage of skills, training, resources.
Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi requested the commission to investigate the sector after the Life Esidimeni tragedy.
The SAHRC says thta it's received nationwide complaints about access to healthcare services.
Submissions have been made by representatives from the Health Department from various provinces, National Treasury and the Basic Education Department.
The SAHRC says it will now analyse the submissions made and then write up recommendations.
Chairperson Bongani Majola says that these investigations have revealed other issues in the health sector.
“There’s a lack of resources. We think the mental healthcare sector needs more attention.”
Majola says that the hearings involve incidents apart from the Life Esidimeni tragedy.
He says that after the commission’s report is sent to Parliament, it will make sure that its recommendations are implemented.
