Convicted coffin assault duo bail application denied

07 December 2017

The two Mpumalanga farmers Willem Oosthuizen and Theo Jackson who were jailed for assaulting Victor Mlotshwa after forcing him into a coffin have been denied bail by the Middelburg High Court on Thursday.
The duo had approached the court to grant them bail while they await the final decision of the Supreme Court of Appeal regarding their jail sentences.

The duo has pleaded with the court to reduce their jail sentences.
The High Court in Middelburg had previously dismissed the duo’s appeal.
They were convicted in October this year and were sentenced to 11 and 14 years in prison respectively.
The two forced Mlotshwa into a coffin while they also threatened to set it alight.
The incident which happened on farm premises in Middelburg in August last year came to light after the video of Mlotshwa’s ordeal went viral on social media.
Following their verdict in October, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) in the province praised Judge Sekgopotje Mphahlele for showing respect to the country’s Constitution when passing the judgment on the two.
