HRC to investigate Hammanskraal water ‘crisis’

16 July 2018

The commission has invited the metro and the Gauteng department of water to explain the action taken regarding the allegations.

The Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) will visit Hammanskraal on Tuesday to investigate allegations that water served to the local community is unsafe.
SAHRC Gauteng manager, Buang Jones said residents recently complained that the water could be contaminated with cholera.
“The residents allege the Tshwane metro has violated their right to human dignity, clean environment, access to water, health and access to information by its failure to provide them with clean water and administer measures aimed at ensuring that their right to water is realised,” said Jones.
He said the purpose of the visit was to interview the residents and establish the veracity of the allegations.
He said the commission was concerned that water might be contaminated and posed a health risk to residents.

“The commission is of the view that the above places at risk the rights of Hammanskraal residents to water and sanitation, bodily integrity and an environment that is not harmful to their health, among others.”
He said the commission had invited the metro and the Gauteng department of water and sanitation to appear before it on 19 July, to establish the cause of the recent violent protests and the steps the City and the department had taken regarding the allegations.
