Golden Lions Rugby Union clears Roodepoort Rugby Club Players of Racism

14 August 2018

Roodepoort, Johannesburg Roodepoort Rugby Club (RRC) has been informed of the outcome and decision of the Golden Lions Rugby Union Disciplinary Committee (GLRU DC) decision regarding the incident that took place on Wednesday 25 April 2018 during the match between RRC U21 and Wanderers U21.

The management and players of RRC accept the decision and judgement of the GLRU DC and will implement the sanctions recommended. The GLRU, using the evidence of two players, found the players “not guilty” of using a racist remark during play. While there was testimony that a racial slur was made, no specific person was identified to have made the alleged remark.

A player from Roodepoort Rugby Club, Ruben Chambers, was found guilty of striking another player, from Wanderers, and has been banned for four games, three of which are suspended until the end of the 2019 season, on condition he is not found guilty of contravening Rule 10 (A) of the Laws of Rugby.

“RRC supported and participated in the GLRU disciplinary process and welcome the decision of the GLRU DC. We look forward to working closely with the GLRU and Wanderers Rugby Club (WRC) in ensuring that nothing like this happens again and have agreed to a mediation and reconciliation process lead by the South African Human Rights Commission,” says Roxy Roux, Chairman of the Roodepoort Rugby Club.
RRC has engaged in a process conducted by the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), whose aim is to investigate issues of racism, victimisation, harassment and bullying. The management and players of RRC commit to ensuring that recommendations from this process are fully implemented.

The management team at the Roodepoort Rugby Club take allegations of racism very seriously and will in partnership with the GLRU and SAHRC run an anti-racism workshop for all players and coaching staff in the period leading up to the 2019 season.
RRC look forward to playing against Wanderers U19 and U21 on Wednesday evening 14 August 2018 at Pirates Rugby Club and ending the 2018 season with a solid game of rugby.
