Raw sewage huge concern in NW

04 October 2018

The unending issues of raw sewage engulfing residents in the North West have once again came to light and this time will be under scrutiny by the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) in Huhudi near Vryburg.

The SAHRC confirmed to OFM News that they are currently carrying out their own investigations into the plight of residents regarding sewage in that area.
Meanwhile, the opposition parties have also made noise regarding the raw sewage saying the spillage in the area has cost emerging farmers millions of rands in dead livestock.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) Member of Parliament, Joe McGluwa, says during their oversight inspection in June, it was found that the sewage treatment is in total disrepair.
McGluwa says the sewage spillage has been ongoing for more than ten years, costing an emerging farmer from Huhudi over R2 million in livestock losses.
“And you can see how cattle are also drinking the same water as the community in that area and we believe that something must be done.
I myself engaged with the community and it was difficult to walk around and inhale what the people have been inhaling for so many years in that area. But we hope that the government will come up with processes and programmes that can assist people of Huhudi and the entire North West when it comes to the issues of raw sewage,” says McGluwa.
OFM News earlier reported that residents of JB Marks, that include Potchefstroom, labelled the frequent sewage spills as inhumane and a threat to their lives.
Municipal spokesperson, Willie Maphosa, confirmed to OFM News that the municipality was indeed aware of the particular issue and has since been trying its utmost best to deal with the sewage problem in that area.
Late last month the opposition parties in the troubled Municipality called for the direct intervention by the Minister of water and sanitation over what they label as a sewerage crisis.
Meanwhile, the departmental spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau, told OFM News that the department is aware of the situation and they are concerned.
