Health MEC subpoenaed over Gauteng baby deaths

9 November 2018

Health MEC Gwen Ramokgopa will be subpoenaed by the SAHRC as part of its investigation into the deaths of nine babies at the Rahima Moosa Mother and Baby Hospital in Gauteng.
The infants died as a result of a deadly bacteria outbreak at the hospital earlier this year.
Now the commission is demanding answers.

The common thread in all the site inspections we've conducted is that there are severe staff shortages, maladministration, overcrowding, short of beds...we want her to address all of these concerns.
— Buang Jones, Gauteng Provincial Manager of the South African Human Rights Commission

Jones admits that these issues are common to public hospitals, but says they are concerned by a lack of action by the department.
We have not seen any sense of urgency on the part of the department to address these issues.
— Buang Jones, Gauteng Provincial Manager of the South African Human Rights Commission

Jones says many of the challenges faced by public hospitals are directly related to the budgets allocated by government.
We would implore government to prioritse health.
— Buang Jones, Gauteng Provincial Manager of the South African Human Rights Commission

Dr Medupi Modisane speaks on behalf of the department.
There is acknowledgement from the department that more hospitals are needed in Gauteng, the only limiting factor is budgetary restraints.
— Dr. Medupi Modisane, Head of Medical Services in Gauteng:
