SAHRC report reveals racism complaints take top spot

According to the Human Rights Commission, racism and infringements of socio-economic rights were the most reported human rights violations in South Africa for the 2016/2017 year.
Advocate Bongani Majola says it is worrying that complaints relating to equality still takes the top spot. He says the urban population seems to be aware of the existence of the commission and the provisions of the Constitution.
According to the Human Rights Commission, racism and infringements of socio-economic rights were the most reported human rights violations in South Africa for the 2016/2017 year.
Advocate Bongani Majola says it is worrying that complaints relating to equality still takes the top spot. He says the urban population seems to be aware of the existence of the commission and the provisions of the Constitution.
There are fewer complaints from rural provinces, while people living in provinces such as Gauteng and the Western Cape seem more aware of their rights.
Race and issues pertaining to racism continue to haunt South Africa and it doesn't look like they are going to go away very soon.

There has been a slight dip in the 2016/17 financial year and we hope this will continue. It will be interesting to see next time we do another report, whether it goes up or continue to go down.

Majola says successful convictions of high profile racism cases like that of Vicki Momberg will set a precedent and be a lesson to those who want to commit similar violations.
The commission has taken that attitude that we are not going to tolerate racism at any stage no matter how big or small we are going to tackle it.
