Human Rights Commission to investigate BLF comments over Hoërskool Driehoek tragedy

04 February 2019

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) is set to investigate comments by Black Fight Land First (BLF) spokesperson, Lindsay Maasdorp, in which he celebrated the tragedy at Hoërskool Driehoek.

This comes after a piece of a concrete walkway collapsed at the school in Vanderbijlpark, south of Johannesburg, on Friday morning, claiming the lives of three school pupils on the scene.
A fourth learner succumbed to his injuries in the ICU of an Alberton hospital on Sunday.
More than 20 other learners were also injured and suffered slight to critical injuries.

BLF spokesperson Lindsay Maasdorp had tweeted that the deaths at the school should be celebrated.
"Siyanda Gumede is correct! God is responding, why should we frown on the ancestors' petition to punish the land thieves including their offspring," Maasdorp wrote on Twitter.
The SAHRC's Buang Jones says the human rights body is aware of the Tweet by Maasdorp and have instituted an investigation into the matter.
"To look into whether or not any one or more of the rights listed in the bill of rights were violated," says Buang.
