SAHRC expresses concern over alleged racism in FS schools

08 March 2019

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) says issues relating to human rights violations at schools is of great concern.

This, as the commission’s Free State Manager, Thabang Kheswa, has confirmed that they are also investigating a number of cases relating to racism in schools.

Briefing the media on the provincial 2019/20 plans and progress made on cases under investigation, Kheswa highlighted that the increasing number of racism complaints at schools is a cause for concern, which they will be paying closer attention to during the course of the year.
He says they are currently investigating racism complaints at about three schools in the province.
Although he could not detail the nature of the complains, Kheswa says they will soon release reports on these investigations and that some might be escalated to the Equality Court.

Issues relating to racism at schools created a buzz on social media and made national headlines in January after a picture showing black and white pupils sitting separately according to race in a Grade R classroom at the Laerskool Schweizer-Reneke in the North West went viral.
Kheswa says they are concerned over such cases and that they will be conducting more road shows at schools around the province, to enable children to have easier access to the commission and report such incidents.
He says they are going to implement advocacy interventions and teach learners and teachers about their rights as well as the repercussion for violating others’ rights.
He, nonetheless, adds the number of racism complaints that the commission is receiving in the province are increasingly from adults in work environments.
He alludes that as much as there are allegations of racism in schools, most of the incidents involve the use of the K-word by people in workplaces.
Kheswa has also highlighted that they are also receiving more complaints relating to racism from farm dwellers.
