SAHRC concerned about slow progress on Vaal District sewage crisis

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) says it’s concerned about the slow progress of addressing the sewage crisis facing the Vaal District.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) says it’s concerned about the slow progress of addressing the sewage crisis facing the Vaal District.
On Thursday the commission conducted an inspection at the Sebokeng and Rietspruit waste water treatment plants in the Emfuleni Local Municipality.
Provincial manager of the Gauteng office for the South African Human Rights Commission’s (SAHRC) Buang Jones says, “The purpose of the visit yesterday (Thursday) was to observe and examine the current status and we found that the situation has not improved since the military intervention.”
“They are still working under severe financial constraints notwithstanding the undertaking by the Minister of Finance that an amount of approximately R1-billion will be allocated to do or conduct remediation work in the Vaal River.”
