City of Joburg hosts Africa Day Social Cohesion Summit

23 May 2019

The City of Johannesburg hosted the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) for Africa Day Social Cohesion Summit at the Metropolitan Building on 23 May.

The City said the integration of people from all backgrounds and walks of life is a democratic tenet upon which this country has been built towards an equal society. It added that it encourages all residents to embrace the beauty and diversity of the people who live in Joburg.
“I remain committed to ensuring that Johannesburg becomes a safe place for all residents to live, work and play. I welcome all visitors from across the world into the City and the country South Africa,” said Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba.

"I would like all citizens of the world to visit our city and invest in growing our economy and creating jobs for our people.”
The mayor has applauded the migrants for their contribution to growing the economy in the City. “Our brothers and sisters from all over Africa play an important role in encouraging a vibrant economy by buying goods in our country, establishing businesses and stimulating economic growth.”
The MMC for Health and Social Development Mpho Phalatse said Africa Day gives Africans an opportunity to get to know each other.
The African Union has brought together members of Africa to collectively address the challenges it is facing such as climate change and poverty.
“Africa Day presents an opportunity for South Africans to reconnect and recommit themselves in support of all government intervention to develop a better Africa and a better world.”
