Saru to launch internal investigation in Etzebeth assault charges

03 October 2019

The SA Human Rights Commission announced on Wednesday, that it would institute legal proceedings against Eben Etzebeth in the Equality Court, relating to allegations of an incident in Langebaan in August.

A spokesman for SARU said: “SA Rugby reaffirms its commitment as a good corporate citizen to abide by any requirements placed on it or its employees by South African authorities.
“We have fulfilled all requests to date and will continue to do so as and when advised. Following our discussions with the South African Human Rights Commission, we have instituted an internal process to address the matter, the details of which remain an employment matter between SA Rugby and the player.”

The SAHRC said it received a complaint in August 2019 alleging that the Springbok rugby player, "physically and racially" abused the complainant in Langebaan during an altercation.
In a terse statement, the SAHRC said it was taking the matter to the Equality Court in Cape Town.
Previous reports soon after the alleged incident said Etzebeth met with the SAHRC and "strongly denied" the allegations.
“It is completely untrue and unfounded to claim that I physically or racially abused anyone in Langebaan as has been reported on social media. Multiple witnesses can corroborate that," Etzebeth was quoted as saying.
