Chin'ono was arrested in July on charges of inciting public violence.

Zimbabwe has been on edge with prominent activists and journalists arrested for protesting alleged corruption.
The SAHRC said they fully support their Zimbabwean counterparts.

"We note and support various calls made by the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC), recently, including the steps it took soon after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic related measures, to highlight the importance of respecting and fulfilling, among others, the right to life, freedom from torture, inhuman and degrading treatment as well as the right to a fair trial," the statement read.
The SAHRC remains concerned about the alleged human rights violations in Zimbabwe, saying these violations have implications on South Africa and neighbouring countries.

The commission is also urging the government of Zimbabwe to treat those arrested and detained humanely.
The SAHRC has now called on the African Union (AU) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to intervene.
