SAHRC probing Benoni woman’s racist rant

25 November 2022

A Benoni woman who went on a racial rant describing black men as being worse than pit bulls, saying they should be killed, is facing a probe by the South African Human Rights Commission.

The voice recording was posted on the Facebook page of the Sizwe Kupelo Foundation, which is campaigning for the breed of dogs to be banned and came on the same day as the death of a child who mauled by the breed in East London.

The woman was identified by the Sowetan newspaper as 60-year-old Belinda Migor, who reportedly provides bookkeeping and administrative services to businesses around Ekurhuleni.

SA Human Rights Commissioner Andre' Gaum described the contents of her voice message as "horrific and deplorable".

"The South African Human Rights Commission is in possession of the clip in question. The contents of which is indeed horrific and deplorable. It no doubt constitutes prima-facie hate speech of the worst possible kind.

"As a result, the commission's Gauteng provincial office is assessing the matter and a decision is pending as to either investigate it or take it to the Equality Court. The court could also be approached to refer the matter to the NPA for possible prosecution."

The Sizwe Kupelo Foundation has strongly condemned the woman's remarks.

Kupelo says her utterances have no place in modern SA.

"We feel that the voice note is unfortunate. It has no place in South Africa. It is distasteful. Some media houses have been able to trace the perpetrator.

"Such utterances are unfortunate and has no place in this South Africa. Our campaign is genuine, it is about protecting lives and no one should use this campaign to pursue another agenda."

The woman has blamed diabetes for her racial rant saying it causes her to blackout.
