Gauteng

The Gauteng Province is the smallest of all the countries provinces with the highest population density. The Commissions Gauteng Office as a result receives a high volume of diverse complaint types and complainants. Its cosmopolitan nature and core as the economic hub mean that a range of issues are brought to the attention of the provincial office involving both policy and new and emerging matters of interest to the region. Complaints against national departments, entities, individuals and businesses located in Gauteng are addressed through the Gauteng Offices of the Commission.

The Gauteng Provincial office maintains close engagements with stakeholders which include civil society organisations, tertiary institutions, faith based bodies, public bodies, community organisations, parliamentary structures, other Chapter 9 institutions and businesses.

A dedicated team of 12 people work with complaints, research and advocacy interventions in the province.

Achievements
  • The provincial office investigated key complaints of national interest involving the Child Protection Register; the Lindela Repatriation Centre, Alexandra Women’s Hostel; Standard Bank; and M-Net amongst others.
  • It has also successfully embarked on restorative justice initiatives in a number of matters notably involving the e-tolling system, and those relating to race through alternative dispute resolution.
  • The Gauteng Provincial office created precedent in its litigation preventing the provincial department of Human Settlements from proceeding with an eviction and securing the engagement of parties toward amicable resolution of their dispute.
  • A number of stakeholders work closely with the Gauteng Office to promote an understanding and respect for basic human rights through advocacy and research including community advice centres.
