The events at Marikana: Understanding the Immediate Needs, Required Responses and Addressing the Long-Term Implications
Date: Tuesday, August 28 2012
ATTENTION: Editors and Reporters
Members of the media are invited to a roundtable discussion that will feature government departments, civil society, NGOs and academics on the Marikana incident. Independent Police Investigative Directorate and other Chapter Nine institutions will also attend.
The recent tragedy and violence that unfolded at the Lonmin mine in Marikana, North West, has left the country both shocked and perplexed. This incident has wide ranging implications for building a peaceful South Africa.
As public discourse unfolds it has become clear that the factors implicit in this massacre are complex and multifaceted. Explanations range from socio-economic issues, state responses and responsibilities, psychosocial issues and labour issues, amongst others.
In order to holistically address the Lonmin incident and its implications for the country at large, collaborative efforts by partners from different perspectives is required.
With the advent of the roundtable discussion, the SAHRC and CSVR call upon South Africans to be cognisant of the ties that unite us rather than divide us as a people and echoes the values enshrined both in our Constitution of equality, dignity and respect.
This roundtable discussion is therefore aimed at sharing lessons learnt from such incidents in a bid to:
To share the findings of the report based on a study conducted by CSVR of the Marikana situation.
Seek inputs from all participants on good practice in mitigating and preventing collective violence.
Develop a network of institutions working together to building sustainable peace and democracy.
Understanding the immediate needs, required responses and addressing the long-term implications
