Poor sanitation in Limpopo at crisis level - SAHRC

2 May 2023

While the community of Matseding Village is still waiting on the Sekhukhune District Municipality to drain their overflowing pit toilets, the South African Human Rights Commission in Limpopo says it is concerned that such conditions will leave residents exposed to several diseases.

According to the residents, the pit toilets with a drainage outlet should be drained every six months, however the municipality has failed to empty them for over two years now.

Some communities have resorted to relieving themselves in the bushes.

The municipality has told Capricorn FM News that it is in the final stages of appointing a service provider to drain the pit toilets in Matseding village and all the various areas in the district.

Meanwhile, SAHRC Provincial Manager Victor Mavhidula says the issue of poor sanitation in the province has reached crisis levels and has urged communities to approach its office whenever they have challenges.
