Festival a 'free hive' of creativity

THE festive season has officially opened and if you're in Cape Town, you're in luck. The Mother City is buzzing with fresh and vibrant entertainment spaces and what's even better, it's free. With the recent free street jol at the Festive Lights SwitchOn event getting Cape Town into the festive spirit, gear up for yet another highenergy celebration as the Cape Town Arts Festival hits the streets on December 9 and 10 at the Castle of Good Hope. Join local performances by YoungstaCPT, DJ Ready D, Dee Koala, Kristi Louw and a host of other creative artists for a free weekend of fun, artistic expression, inspiration and escapism that celebrates Cape Town's bountiful talent. Everyone is invited. The list of fun things to do includes: The Art of Wellness each day begins with a free wellness session featuring tai chi, Zumba and yoga.
Harmonies of Heritage headlining the festival is awardwinning rap artist YoungstaCPT, who will be joined by fourtime South African DMC Championships winner DJ Ready D, and singer songwriter Kristi Lowe, who rose to fame as a teen after her collaboration with GoodLuck. Also on the lineup is Cape Town rap star Dee Koala. The smooth sounds of songbird Candice Thornton take the stage before soloist and vocal coach, as well as enigmatic marimba player, Bongani Sotshononda shows off his talent. DJ Brandon Leigh and DJ Camo keep people entertained on the ones and twos before the Afro Suns Marimba Band and IMAD join the lineup, both of which hail from Langa. Beyond Busking giving deserved airtime and hero status to Cape Town's informal music entertainers, the CTAF has repeated its highly acclaimed Beyond Busking programme, a free threemonth training and mentoring workshop programme culminating with performance opportunities at the festival to eight talented artists. The Spoken Word a poetry masterclass, "from Page to Stage", led by the worldrenowned Bulelwa Basse, promises to be a captivating exploration of the art of verse. Enchanted Tales and Artsy Tales geared towards young creative minds, this children's workshop day offers a holistic experience, including meditation sessions, face painting, a puppet show, short films and storytelling by the renowned Fatima Dike. These children's workshops take place on Saturday, December 9 from 11am to 2pm. Artisans' Haven Browse a host of vendor stalls and enjoy the excellent craftsmanship on display. Street performers, including mime artists and balloon artists, will add to the vibrant atmosphere. Shine Visual Arts Exhibition a collection of artworks from 16 emerging and established artists embracing the full spectrum of mediums from ceramics, visual art, photography and sculpture to live installations. Shine Dance Challenge 50 participants will compete for the opportunity to take home prize money. The elimination rounds are on Saturday. Sunday plays host to the finals, who will dance their own choreographed set to the specially created Shine Song, a commissioned piece by the Human Rights Commission. Sink your teeth into tasty meals from local vendors on the day. There is nothing quite like the delicious and South African culinary creativity of Capetonians.
