Kimberley Water Crisis Persists Despite More Repairs, Interruptions

01 Dec 2023

KIMBERLEY – In the wake of the Sol Plaatje municipality’s announcement that water supply would be restored to affected areas from 09:00 following repairs, many residents continue to endure water scarcity. The official update stated that repair work had been completed on a major rupture in one of the valves, with taps expected to flow by 09:00.
However, residents in Belgravia, Herlear, Beaconsfield, Hadison Park, Colville Ext., Eltoro Park, and other areas supplied from the Newton Reservoir are still experiencing water interruptions beyond the posted schedules. Residents in certain areas have reported not receiving water since the initial restoration announcement on 23 November. Despite announcements from the Sol Plaatje Municipality (SPM), issues persist, and councillors seem uncertain about the ongoing problems. Concerns are rising as it appears that the water crisis is becoming entangled in political manoeuvres. There are allegations that officials are misleading SPM Communications to save political face, while certain opposition parties and third parties share inaccurate notices without providing solutions, context or reflecting residents’ experiences, exacerbating residents’ frustration. Residents are urged to speak up and share their experiences. The Kimberley Prospector has submitted a growing number of complaints, currently at 145, to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC). A formal complaint has been lodged to address the violation of residents’ basic right to access water.
