    Human rights activist recognised for his efforts

    Human rights activist recognised for his efforts Community activist, Sham Maharaj was honoured by the South African Human Rights Commission for his work in promoting human rights at the Citation of Honour Awards Ceremony, which was held at the Chief Albert Luthuli Museum in Groutville as part of Human Rights Month on Wednesday, 27 March.
    Maharaj commenced his activism work in 1978 and continued even after retiring, over three years ago. He was acknowledged for his selfless dedication and unwavering commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights as enshrined in the Bill of Rights. Commission chairperson, Chris Nissen said that they recognise and appreciate the transformative work done by Maharaj to develop and advance South African communities by providing access to justice, dignity, and freedom in line with the spirit, purport, and objects of the Constitution." "Your commitment to improving the quality of life of all persons contributes positively to the achievement of the aspirations of the South African Constitution, which are to heal the divisions of the past and establish a society based on democratic values, social justice, and fundamental Human rights and community activist, Sham Maharaj was recognised by the SA Human Rights Commission for promoting human rights human rights," said Nissen. Maharaj said: "When I got involved in community activism work 45 years ago, I expected nothing in return but to ensure the improvement in the lives of the community I live in. Today it was indeed a privilege to be receiving this prestigious recognition award and I receive this award in the name of all individuals and organisations that I have worked closely with over the many years."
