South Africans ought to embrace diversity

20 March 2017

Bloemfontein - The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) urges South Africans to celebrate diversity and unite towards combating all forms of discrimination as the country celebrates Human Rights Day tomorrow.

According to SAHRC Free State Provincial Manager,Buang Jones, high inequality is still one of the major challenges faced by the country. He says there is a need to address inequality and to adopt a culture of tolerance. He adds  people should know and understand the responsibilities that come with rights. Jones urged people to report all cases of human rights violations.

“It is our belief that through increased knowledge of human rights this will embed a culture of human rights and build a province in which the breeze of unity and social cohesion will prevail and tail the storm of disunity. In a nut shell, the message is to reflect the values as stated in our constitution and values which are in the main premise of human dignity, freedom, the rule of law and on the principle of unity and diversity”.

Human Rights Day is a national holiday that is commemorated annually on March 21 to remind South Africans of the struggle for liberation and the sacrifices that accompanied the struggle for the attainment of democracy in the country.

This year’s celebrations will be held in Ginsberg, King William’s Town in the Eastern Cape, under the theme: “The Year of OR Tambo: Unity in Action in Advancing Human Rights
