He said the commission took a decision to examine if any factors have hindered the transformation progress since 1994 after receiving complaints prior to national hearings held in 2014.

Majola said the commission recommended an intensified human rights-based induction at universities. “A holistic approach is needed that does not focus on just the numbers of previously disadvantaged students at our universities. We also need to explore other structural factors that may hinder access to education. Such as costs, cultural inclusion into the social fabric of the universities, curriculum change and the face of the faculties,” he said.

He added that the existence of racial tension also largely deters the transformation process at institutions of higher learning.

A memorandum of understanding was also signed between the centre itself, the Free State division of the SAHRC as well as the UFS’s Institution for Reconciliation and Social Justice.
