UCT sets aside R11m to accommodate disabled students

CAPE TOWN - University of Cape Town (UCT) management says it has set aside more than R11 million to ensure the institution is more accommodating to students with disabilities.

The university was reported to the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) by a student who accused UCT of discriminating against people with disabilities.
UCT student Khanyisa Ntombeni was among others who staged a sit-in outside the Bremner Building to raise awareness around the issue.
Ntombeni believes the environment at UCT makes it difficult for disabled students to move around.
“There’s an infrastructure issue, which would obviously be the buildings; that means ramps, lifts, rails that are not marked and doors that are not left open for people in wheelchairs to be able to access in and out of the building.”
UCT spokesperson Elijah Moholola says: “UCT has done significant work to support students and staff with disabilities on campus. Earlier this month, the university secured funding amounting to R11.5 million to go specifically towards students at the university’s disability unit.”
