JOHANNESBURG - The South African Jewish Board of Deputies has welcomed the Equality Court judgment finding Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu)'s Bongani Masuku guilty of hate speech against the Jewish community.
The board laid a complaint against Masuku with the South African Human Rights Commission claiming that he had made threatening, inflammatory and derogatory statements against Jewish students at Wits University in 2009.
When the commission found Masuku guilty and asked him to apologise, he refused.
Now eight years later, with this latest finding, the board's Wendy Kahn says they hope Masuku complies with the judgment.
“We do believe that this vindicated our concerns regarding his statements to our students, to Jewish students in 2009 where he threatened them at the university and we do believe that this judgment was a good judgment and we are trusting that he will comply.”
