The South African Human Rights Commission has confirmed that it has received a response from KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo, in relation to its investigation into the state of public oncology services in the province.
The report found a shortage of oncologists, oncology nurses and a functional equipment to diagnose, screen and treat cancer.
SAHRC spokesperson Gail Smith says the commission remains deeply concerned about the health of some patients who are forced to wait up to seven months for cancer treatment.
Smith says the department has to meet a second deadline by the end of this month:
The commission is studying the report in detail to assess whether all of our suggestions and recommendations have been adhered to and we will be releasing a statement soon. I don’t think that report will be public at any stage until the investigation is finalised. We've waited for one report and there's another one. We had requested additional information from the MEC which is due on or before the 28th July.”
