13 August 2017

Footage of the assault circulated on social media this week.

DURBAN - The KwaZulu-Natal Education Department says it will launch an independent probe into the brutal attack of a girl at Siyathuthuka Secondary School.

Footage of the assault circulated on social media this week. A girl is seen pinned against a wall before being kicked in the head and back several times.

Police, the South African Human Rights Commission and the Social Development Department Will also contribute to resolving the matter.

KwaZulu-Natal Education Department’s Muzi Mahlambi says they want to send a strong message to school and pupils about gender based violence.

“We want them to know that if they don’t deal with these matters when they are reported, there will be consequences.”

Both the victim and the perpetrator have since moved to different schools.

However, it's unclear where the boy is. Meanwhile, the person who took the video will now be brought in to help track him down.

Provincial education MEC Mthandeni Dlungwane is also expected to visit the school next week.
