#SAHRC concerned about FS municipalities under administration

26 August 2017

Bloemfontein - The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) says the fact that municipalities in the Free State are placed under administration will not help relieve poor communities.

Speaking at a media briefing in Bloemfontein Friday, the Free State and Northern Cape commissioner for the SAHRC, Mohamed Ameermia, said that these municipalities are in the ICU and that they cannot help themselves and poor communities.

A Trends Report released by Statistics South Africa recently indicated that over 30 million South Africans were living in poverty in 2015.

Ameermia says that the socio economic issues that they saw on the ground this week is very concerning.

“The results on the ground speak a different language from what we hear in the main stream media. The government wants to give you the good story, but they should give you the real story as well. As much as they're doing good work, they should also be encouraged to say that we will attend to the backlog that exists. The poverty trap is growing and people's hope is waning,” says Ameermia.
