North West children’s safety under question

18 October 2017

Questions relating to the safety of children in the North West are mounting after Social Development MEC Hoffman Galeng’s comment that children in impoverished communities such as Ratlou Municipality are at risk from human traffickers.

This follows reports that 30 of the 50 children that were trafficked from villages in the area to work as seasonal farm workers are still missing. The DA in the province has weighed in on the matter calling for a multi-disciplinary task team to deal with the trafficking of children. The South African Human Rights Commission further confirmed that it has instituted investigations against the Social Development officials and other government departments on the various possible violation of children’s human rights in the province.
The Provincial Social Department is, however, yet to respond to OFM News’ enquiries.
