Ultimatum given on school’s toilets

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has issued an ultimatum to the Department of Education to pay nearly R2-million owed to a contractor responsible for building ablution facilities at a Port Elizabeth school.

The SAHRC, Limpopo Provincial Office will be conducting a provincial Indaba with special focus on women, and people with disabilities, and their right to access health care services.  The purpose of the Indaba is to create a platform for reflection on the rights of these vulnerable members of society vis a vis section 27(1)(a) of the Constitution of South Africa.

On the 14th September 2017, the South African Human Rights Commission (“the Commission”) in collaboration with the CRL Commission, PANSALB, and the WITS Language school, will be hosting a dialogue on the Recognition of South African Sign Language (SASL) as an official language.  The dialogue will be held at the South African Human Rights Commission offices in Braamfontein. The theme of the event is: MAKE IT HAPPEN, SASL OFFICIALISATION.

South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC or the Commission) is deeply concerned with reports of violent protests taking place in Vuwani, in Limpopo, which have reportedly shut down schools.  The right to education is a fundamental right protected by our Constitution.  The protests, especially reports of children being prevented from attending school was specifically raised by the Commission for remedial action arising from its probe into earlier such incidence in Vuwani.
