Commission should not be the ref of racist rants

IF YOU suspect 2016 is fast becoming the year of the social media clap-back against racism in SA, you are not mistaken. I was taken aback earlier this week by a statistic from the South African Human Rights Commission. Apparently, the proportion of complaints about racist speech on online platforms and social media that the commission deals with on an annual basis rose sharply from 2% to 22% in the past two financial years.

SAHRC Senior Researcher, Faraaz Mahomed, wins The Commonwealth Short Story Prize
Senior Equality Researcher, Faraaz Mahomed recently won the Commonwealth Africa Regional short story award for the “The Pigeon.”
Mohamed, who is a clinical psychologist, has described winning the award as an inspiration to invest more in fictional writing.

Commissioner Ameermia assess the situation in Sibuyile Informal Park
On 24 May 2015, during his provincial visit in the Free State Province, Commissioner Ameermia accompanied by the staff of the SAHRC conducted a site visit to Sibuyile Park Informal Settlement. This was a follow up from the visit conducted by Commissioner Ameermia in September 2015 where he met with community members of the informal settlement. The matter stems from an investigative report issued by the SAHRC where it found that inter alia, there was a violation of the right of residents to dignity; a clean environment; access to adequate housing; access to adequate water and sanitation; and access to information.

SAHRC celebrates Africa Day 2016
Africa Day is commemorated annually on 25 May to mark the day when the Organisation of African Unity (now known as the African Union) was formed in 1963 in acknowledgement of the solidarity and unity of countries across the African continent.
This is a significant day for our country and for our continent.
As a national human rights institution supporting constitutional democracy, the South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) joins the rest of Africa in commemorating this historic day on 25 May 2016.
