The South African Human Rights Commission (Commission or SAHRC) strongly condemns the irresponsible utterances by the Deputy Minister of Police, Bongani Mkongi. On Friday the 14th July 2017, the Deputy Minister, while addressing concerns around crime and hijacked buildings in Johannesburg, Hillbrow in particular, was quoted by media as saying that: "How can a city in South Africa be 80% foreign national? That is dangerous. South Africans have surrendered their own city to the foreigners."

Durban – A deal has been reached between the KwaZulu-Natal health department and radiation oncology treatments and software maker Varian Medical Systems to restart two of the province’s cancer radiotherapy machines. On Wednesday, the department said KwaZulu-Natal health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo had met with Jean-Luc Devleeschauwer president of Varian's Oncology Systems business in Europe, the Middle East, India and Africa.

The SAHRC welcomed the fact that the Equality Court for the District of the Cape‚ sitting in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court last Friday‚ had once again confirmed that the use of the ‘K-word’‚ as a derogatory racial epithet‚ is unlawful and bears consequences.

PRETORIA – Police Minister Fikile Mbalula on Tuesday said he had directed his deputy, Bongani Mkongi, to correct his recent remarks regarding the prevalence of crime and foreign nationals in Johannesburg. “I’ve gone through what he said, and indeed, that is too rough. I do understand what he said. He was trying to address a problem in Hillbrow … Do you remember what Herman Mashaba said and we came down on him? We cannot say that. We must do what the law permits,” Mbalula said as he addressed journalists during a visit to the Sunnyside police station in Pretoria where he did his annual Mandela Day service.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has condemned comments made by Deputy Police Minister Bongani Mkongi, about the problem of hijacked buildings in Johannesburg.

Mkongi was quoted last week as having said: "How can a city in SA be 80% foreign national? That is dangerous. South Africans have surrendered their own city to the foreigners." These utterances have been described as xenophobic by the human rights commission.
