The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has condemned comments made by Deputy Police Minister Bongani Mkongi, about the problem of hijacked buildings in Johannesburg.
Mkongi was quoted last week as having said: "How can a city in SA be 80% foreign national? That is dangerous. South Africans have surrendered their own city to the foreigners." These utterances have been described as xenophobic by the human rights commission.

Johannesburg – The South African Human Rights’ Commission (SAHRC) on Monday strongly condemned alleged xenophobic comments by Deputy Police Minister Bongani Mkongi, as it has the potential of fuelling anti-immigrant sentiments. In an interview with EWN in the Hillbrow police station on Friday, Mkongi warned South Africans not to "surrender" the country to foreign nationals.

On Tuesday, the Red Ant Security Relocation and Eviction Services (commonly known as the Red Ants) evicted shack dwellers on the border between Ivory Park and Tembisa township. Residents once again accused the Red Ants of violence and theft of their cellphones and cash.

Judgment was handed down in the Equality Court last week, unequivocally upholding a South African Human Rights Commission ruling that Cosatu international relations spokesman Bongani Masuku had been guilty of anti-Semitic hate speech, for which he must apologise to the Jewish community.

The DA – set to do oversight visits at Addington and Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central hospitals on Monday – were denied access to the medical facilities.
The team led by Patricia Kopane, the national DA spokesperson for health, and Dr Imran Keeka, the DA KZN's health spokesperson, were barred by hospital officials from entering Addington Hospital on Monday morning.

The DA is hoping an investigation into PR firm Bell Pottinger will provide it with enough ammunition to seek legal action against individuals in South Africa.

THE South African Human Rights Commission has confirmed that it has received a received a response from the MEC of Health for Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN), Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, in response to the SAHRC’s investigative report on the state of oncology and health rights in KZN.

As KZN says farewell to the last of its oncologists, chilling revelations by the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) show that people diagnosed with cancer who are unlucky enough to find themselves living in the crumbling province can wait up to eight months for treatment.

Durban - More than 150 cancer patients are currently awaiting treatment in KwaZulu-Natal's public health facilities - some for up to eight months, the KwaZulu-Natal department of health revealed as part of its response to The SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).
However, while outlining solutions to the cancer crisis, the department has not provided timeframes for the implementation of these - a concern raised by the SAHRC, which is currently considering the department's response.
