Kimberley - The Democratic Alliance in the Northern Cape province says it will consult the office of the Public Protector and the South African Human Rights Commission following alleged unfair ward committee elections that took place in Roodepan.
The DA Provincial Leader, Andrew Louw, says the municipality failed to ensure that the ward committee elections for Ward 1 were free and fair. He says last night community members were influenced to vote for names that were on a predetermined list of ward candidates who had been handpicked by the ANC. Louw says they are calling to the speaker of the municipality to launc.

Momberg’s trial was postponed several times after she axed her previous lawyer.

Foreign and local currency bonds were downgraded to the "junk" level, following a similar move from the S&P rating agency earlier this week.

Media24 has launched an investigation following its publication of the controversial blog “Could It Be Time To Deny White Men The Franchise?” on Huffington Post South Africa.
The blog was posted on April 13 but removed from the publication's website on April 15‚ after it could not “confirm the veracity of the source”‚ a Media24 statement said.

OTTAWA—Canada’s justice minister is wrapping up a visit to South Africa, where she met with Desmond Tutu, the activist and former bishop best known around the world for standing in opposition to apartheid.
During their meeting, Tutu reflected on the challenge Canada faces in reconciling with its own indigenous peoples, and how it will be up to young people to drive the change, Jody Wilson-Raybould said Friday in an interview.

Johannesburg – South Africa’s credit ratings downgrade must not reflect how South Africans feel about themselves, Judge Jody Kollapen said on Tuesday.
“I don’t think that our credit rating as junk status must reflect how we feel about who we are, as citizens of this country. I don’t feel like a junk person, I feel like a proud South African,” he said during interviews at the JSC for a position at the Constitutional Court.

The announcement followed the outcomes of a meeting held recently between provincial departments and the SAHRC.
The Western Cape Departments of Human Settlements and Social Development, together with the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) had on Thursday announced a commitment to their plans to improve human rights for people with disabilities and special needs, at a media briefing held in Cape Town.

In recent months, the South African slang word makwerekwere has become a powerful example of how words can, indeed, be very hurtful. For those caught up in its reach, it can attract deadly consequences. In its narrowest form, it serves as a pejorative description of black African migrants to South Africa. The targeting of migrant black Africans does not distinguish between those who might be refugees and asylum seekers, and those who could have arrived as legal or illegal immigrants. Sometimes other minority groups, such as migrant Bangladeshis, have been caught up in its violent grip. It is a blunderbuss of a word.
