Cape Town – Deep concern has been expressed by the Save Somali Community (SSC) alleging that their countrymen are being targeted in Western Cape townships. At least eight Somali shopkeepers have been killed in just over a month. “We feel like we are under attack. Our traders are now fearful to even step outside their shops, and instead remain inside their stores." "We are not sure what the motive is, but it is a big concern for us all,” said Abdi Alas Gure of the SSC. He said it appeared that their “brothers” who owned businesses in the townships were being victimised.

How long will this licensing office be allowed to continue verbally abusing clients, who will suffer in silence just to keep the peace?
Today I am forced to report some gross racial discrimination at the Port Shepstone licensing office.
On January 26, my wife and I were patiently waiting in a queue of about 35 people at the licensing office, after joining the queue at 9.30am. Initially I calculated that the office was capturing and handling one person every 15 minutes.
From 10.45am, only one person per hour was allowed into the capturing office. We noticed that about 20 candidates who qualified for learners’ licences were treated preferentially in the capturing room.

Cape Town – Parents of pupils at Uitzig Secondary School, which the Western Cape education department wants to close down, have been urged to seek alternative schools to accommodate their children.
The department said it had sent letters to the parents on Thursday.
On Friday the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) visited the school and said it was in a "deplorable" condition.

“A single short document of 30 articles”—the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights—“has probably had more impact on mankind than any other document in modern history,” said Navi Pillay, then-United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, in 2008. Half a century ago, in December 1966, the United Nations formally translated the rhetorical promises from that declaration into legally binding obligations with the adoption of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. Since then, global efforts to monitor and track human rights violations have grown exponentially.

The recently released report by the Health Ombudsman, Malegapuru Makgoba has revealed that at least 94 mental health patients died in Gauteng, after they were transferred from Life Esidimeni Centre.

Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu has resigned following damning findings by the health ombudsman that ninety-four patients in South Africa died after being moved from the Life Esidimeni hospital to various NGOs said Health Ombudsman Malegapuru Makgoba at a press conference in Pretoria.
“This is a provisional number because…not all the information we could get from the NGOs was often complete... I suspect the number is higher,” said Makgoba.

While the incident sparked outrage‚ some of them will not be taking any action against the church as they say the problem with hate speech towards the LBGTI community is common and needed a long‚ lasting solution.
Lerato Phalakatshela‚ hate crime manager at the OUT‚ a clinic for the LGBTI community‚ said the organisation has been in talks with the South African Council of Churches and the Department of Justice to find common ground on hate speech.

The SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) paid a surprise visit to the severely vandalised Uitzig Secondary School in Cape Town on Tuesday, ahead of a protest by pupils outside the provincial legislature to demand that it is repaired and guarded.
Provincial SAHRC commissioner Chris Nissen and colleagues took in the stripped kitchen, smashed toilets, plundered electricity cables, as well as a trench dug by thieves who stole water pipes.

Western Cape education MEC Debbie Schafer has promised to accommodate 7‚900 unplaced learners in schools by the end of the month.
She also agreed to report to the South African Human Rights Commission on a weekly basis on progress made to accommodate the learners.

A South African pastor namely Prophet Theo Bongani Maseko, allegedly made his congregants drink ‘Engine Cleaning Fluid’ in order to demonstrate God’s power to them.
