The right to equality remains one of the rights most violated in South Africa. This is according to South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) Spokesperson, Gail Smith. March marks Human Rights Month in South Africa with the focus on human rights issues.
“Since 2012, the number one human right violation in South Africa has been around the right to equality. So, that remains the right we go to court on the most as the South African Human Rights Commission ... specifically those cases (which) would involve the use of the "K" word and other derogatory comments with racial undertones such as the use of terms baboon or monkey. So, it is the right to equality that is a top right, followed by labour disputes. We get a lot of labour disputes, most of those we send to the CCMA because they are another body that is setup to deal with specific labour rights and the third top right we deal with is around access to health care services, water, food and social security.”

Every year South Africans celebrate Human Rights Day on March 21 to commemorate the 1960 Sharpeville massacre when police opened fire on a crowd killing 69 unarmed people. They were protesting against the humiliating pass laws that controlled the movement of black people.
Besides a reminder of a dark period in the country’s history, this day also celebrates South Africa’s unique and highly acclaimed constitution. Its Bill of Rights guarantees human dignity and equal rights to all citizens.

Bloemfontein - Institutions of higher learning need to adopt a broader approach to ensure they are fully transformed.
This is according to the chairperson of the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), Bongani Majola, who was speaking at the launch of the Free State Centre for Human Rights at the University of Free State (UFS) on Tuesday evening.

The Seshego Equality Court in Limpopo has ruled that a high school principal has violated the rights of a transgender pupil.

Polokwane – The Equality Court has ruled in favour of a transgender pupil who complained of unfair discrimination and harassment at the hands of her principal.
The judgment was handed down in the Seshego Equality Court on Friday morning, South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) spokesperson Gail Smith said.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC)says the complaints over an article written by controversial journalist and former high commissioner to Uganda, Jon Qwelane, were the highest it has ever received. Qwelane wrote the article titled, "Call me names, gay is not okay" in 2008.
