As part of the 2024 National Schools Moot Court Programme (NSMCP) and following the success of Mpumalanga learners who participated in the Essay Writing Phase of the Project, the South African Human Rights Commission’s Mpumalanga Provincial Office in collaboration with the Department of Basic Education, and the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development in Mpumalanga will be hosting the learners as they take part in the Provincial Oral Round proceedings of the NSMCP.

In a significant step towards enhancing the realization, promotion and protection of human rights in the Eastern Cape and across South Africa, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) in the Eastern Cape signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Walter Sisulu University (WSU) in 2022.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) led by Commissioner Nomahlubi Khwinana will conduct targeted monitoring at facilities for vulnerable people in Kimberley and a stakeholder engagement with the Northern Cape Department of Social Development.  These events are part of ongoing efforts to enhance the welfare and rights of the most vulnerable populations.

On or about 27 May 2024, the South African Human Rights Commission (Commission) in the Eastern Cape Provincial Office (ECPO) was alerted through various media publications to an incident during a protest at Walter Sisulu University. In this incident, nine (9) students were injured by rubber bullets allegedly fired by the South African Police Services (SAPS) and security personnel. Some reports indicated the use of live ammunition to disperse the crowds. These reports alleged that the crowd management methods employed were excessive and fall outside of the prescripts of the empowering legislation.
