On Friday 07 June 2013, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) conducted a site inspection of some of the areas in Cape Town affected by the current sanitation crisis most notably, Gugulethu‘s informal settlements of Kanna, Barcelona and Europe.  The Commission is deeply concerned about the state of sanitation in these areas and believes that the current crisis poses a significant health risk particularly to vulnerable communities.

The South African Human Rights Commission is saddened to learn of the rising death toll of child initiates in both the Mpumalanga and Limpopo Provinces. Of all of the guarantees enshrined within our Constitution, the right to life is the most fundamental. Once a person to whom the care of a child is entrusted reneges on their constitutional imperative to protect that child, it corrodes the very rudimentary aspects of the commitment we have made to them.
The South African Human Rights Commission has learnt with shock and sadness of the sudden tragic passing on of Vuyo Mbuli, a veteran journalist and a world renowned TV and Radio Presenter in the South African Broadcasting Corporation on Saturday the 19th of May 2013.

The South African Human Rights Commission robustly condemns older persons abuse as horrific and notorious stories pertaining the abuse of older women again made headlines in South Africa. This follows up after a brutal attack and rape of a 92 year old woman from Makau, North West in the early hours of Sunday.

The South African Human Rights Commission (Commission) is satisfied that the dignity of people of Rammulotsi, Viljoenskroon in the Free State is restored. The assertion follows inspection that was conducted on 09 April 2013, in Rammulotsi together with the Moqhaka Local Municipality and the Department of Human Settlements to assess progress made in the enclosure of open toilets.
